BERESTEJSCHYNA is Western frontier region of the Ukrainian ethnographic territories, the center of which is Brest (Berestya). It is a part of Polissya, the borders of which are tentatively defined by Western Buh River in the west, and a valley formed by Prypyat' River and its right-wing tributaries Lan' and Tsna in the south-east. In the north Berestejschyna borders the Belorussian ethnographic lands.
Up to these days the inhabitants of Berestejschyna preserve a unique oral musical tradition. It is a genetically indispensable part of the Polissyan culture and self-contained entity all at once. The musical repertoire of this region is somewhat market by Russian and the Belorussian cultural influences. The reason for such an influence is a complicated political and cultural history of the lands. It has deeply penetrated the local ritual arts.
