Pidliashshia is an ethnographic region on the southwestern border of Ukraine. The borders of Northern Pidliashshia, which consist of territories spanning nearly 2,000 square kilometers are : the Narva River in the north, the Bush river in the south, and the Lybets' and Nurets' river valleys along the western border.
The musical culture of this region developed according to the traditions of Polissia and is marked by the influence of both Belorusian and Polish cultures, a phoneomenom typical for borderlands. Besides traditional works in the Pidliashshans' repetoire of songs there are also authentic church songs, Russian romances that were carried over during the First World War, and works which filtered in from the Polish community and which were later assimilated into Ukrainian culture.
